An international consortium has begun scheduled submarine cable maintenance from April 14 to April 20, with possible evening internet slowdowns across Pakistan.
ISLAMABAD: An international submarine cable consortium has initiated planned maintenance work on a key undersea internet cable system, with operations set to continue until April 20, officials and telecom sources confirmed on Tuesday.
During the maintenance period, internet users across Pakistan may experience reduced speeds and intermittent disruptions, particularly during evening peak hours when network traffic is at its highest. Telecom operators have advised customers to anticipate temporary performance issues while engineers carry out repair and inspection work on the global data transmission route.
According to the consortium, the scheduled maintenance is part of routine infrastructure upkeep designed to improve long-term stability, capacity, and resilience of international connectivity networks linking South Asia with Europe and other regions. The work involves technical inspection, fault prevention measures, and system optimization across multiple segments of the submarine cable system.
Authorities stated that service impacts are expected to remain limited and temporary, with most daytime connectivity likely to remain stable. However, fluctuations in speed and latency may still occur depending on traffic load and routing adjustments during the repair window.
Industry experts noted that submarine cables carry the vast majority of international internet traffic, making such maintenance essential despite short-term inconvenience to users. They emphasized that coordinated global planning helps reduce the risk of unexpected large-scale outages.
Telecom providers have urged users to schedule data-heavy activities outside peak evening hours until the maintenance work is completed as planned.
