Several senior Iranian military leaders, including Defence Minister Amir Nasirzadeh and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander Gen. Mohammad Pakpour, were killed in Israeli strikes early Saturday, according to sources cited by Reuters. Israeli officials had earlier indicated that key members of Iran’s military leadership were among the intended targets.
The strikes were reportedly part of a broader joint operation conducted by Israel and the United States, significantly escalating tensions across the Middle East. Iranian authorities condemned the attacks as illegal and unprovoked, responding with missile launches toward Israel. Air defense systems were activated as both sides exchanged fire, raising fears of a wider regional conflict.
Iran’s foreign minister stated that the country remains fully capable of defending itself, downplaying the loss of senior commanders and signaling continued retaliation.
Global leaders swiftly called for restraint. France, Germany, and Britain urged de-escalation and respect for international law, while the United Nations warned of grave consequences for civilian populations. Other countries, including Canada, Spain, Oman, and Norway, emphasized diplomacy and renewed negotiations.
The latest developments have intensified concerns about regional stability, with diplomatic channels under severe strain amid ongoing military exchanges.
