Iran has requested that its 2026 FIFA World Cup matches be moved from the United States to Mexico citing security concerns. Mahdi Taj President of the Iranian Football Federation stated thatwhen Donald Trump himself says it is not safe for us to visit the U.S. we will not go. Discussions are reportedly underway regarding the transfer of Iran’s matches to Mexico.
Former U.S. President Trump had previously suggested that Iran’s national team should not travel to the United States for security reasons. The move, if approved would create significant logistical challenges for FIFA which is responsible for coordinating venues and schedules across multiple host countries.
British media have reported that FIFA is unlikely to accept Iran’s request though the organization has stated it is in contact with all member countries including Iran regarding the 2026 World Cup arrangements.
The situation follows Iran’s earlier decision to withdraw from participating in the World Cup in the United States announced by Iranian Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali. He cited the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader as the main reason for refusing to play in the U.S.
