WASHINGTON: US Congressman Jack Bergman has publicly thanked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir for Pakistan’s reported role in ongoing peace negotiations between the United States and Iran, signaling growing recognition of Islamabad’s diplomatic influence in the region.
In a letter dated May 15, Bergman — who identified himself as co-chair of the Congressional Pakistan Caucus — praised the leadership of US President Donald Trump while highlighting Pakistan’s support in facilitating dialogue during a period of heightened regional tensions.
“The United States’ relationship with Pakistan is of enduring strategic importance, and Pakistan’s willingness to leverage its unique position to bring these parties to the table is a demonstration of true statesmanship,” Bergman wrote in the letter.
The Republican congressman also described Pakistan’s partnership as “indispensable” to the broader diplomatic effort aimed at addressing concerns related to Iran’s regional activities and nuclear ambitions.
The statement comes at a sensitive time for the Middle East, where diplomatic backchannel efforts and regional mediation have intensified amid fears of wider instability. Pakistan has historically maintained working relations with both Tehran and Washington, allowing Islamabad to position itself as a potential bridge in difficult negotiations.
Bergman further expressed his interest in visiting Pakistan again and continuing efforts to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries, underscoring what analysts see as renewed momentum in US-Pakistan engagement.
The development is likely to boost Pakistan’s diplomatic standing internationally, particularly as Islamabad seeks to expand strategic partnerships and reassert its relevance in regional peace and security initiatives.
