Officer known for APS 2014 and Bannu hostage rescue operations assumes command of elite SSG battalion
Lieutenant Colonel Lieutenant Colonel Abid Zaman, widely known as Major Abid, is recognized in the Pakistan Army for courage and operational leadership. He came into prominence during the 2014 Army Public School (APS) attack in Peshawar, where he took part in counter-terrorism operations against militants and sustained injuries while demonstrating notable bravery during the rescue response.
In 2022, during a break from Staff Course training, he voluntarily joined the Zarrar Anti-Terrorism Unit (Zarrar ATU) for the Bannu hostage rescue operation. Officials note that he was injured again during the high-risk mission but continued performing his duties until the operation was successfully completed, reflecting strong commitment under fire.
More recently, sources indicate he has been promoted and assigned command of the Rahbar Battalion, 2 Commando (SSG). The unit is a prestigious formation within Pakistan’s Special Service Group, and commanding it is considered a significant professional milestone within the military hierarchy.
