Authorities urge vigilance as soaring temperatures threaten heatwaves and glacial lake outburst floods across northern Pakistan
ISLAMABAD: The National Emergencies Operation Center of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert warning of potential heatwaves and accelerated glacier melt from March to September 2026 due to an unusual rise in temperatures.
The advisory highlights an increased risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in northern regions, particularly in Gilgit-Baltistan and upper areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Authorities said glacial lakes in vulnerable districts are under continuous monitoring amid concerns that rapid melting between March and June could trigger flash floods.
Several localities in Gilgit-Baltistan including Ahmed Abad, Faiz Abad, Mujawar, Ishkoman Valley, Gulkin, Gulmit, Bubar and Hundas may face potential impact. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, areas such as Reshun, Kumrat, Yarkhun Valley, Lasht, Istach, Dzq and Brep are also at risk.
Provincial disaster management authorities, district administrations and Rescue 1122 services have been placed on alert. Officials have been directed to ensure early warning systems remain operational and evacuation plans are ready.
Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary movement near rivers and glacial streams and to follow official instructions in case of emergency. Verified updates are available through the “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” mobile application.
