Pakistan sends condolences and offers assistance as floods and landslides in southern Ethiopia trigger a growing humanitarian crisis.
WEB DESK: The Government of Pakistan has expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with the people and government of Ethiopia after deadly floods and landslides caused widespread destruction in the country’s southern region.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Pakistan), Islamabad extended heartfelt condolences to families who lost loved ones in the disaster. Authorities in Ethiopia say torrential rains triggered massive mudslides that buried villages and destroyed homes.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families and those who have lost their livelihoods in this tragic calamity,” the statement said, reaffirming Pakistan’s solidarity with its “Ethiopian brothers and sisters.”
Growing humanitarian crisis
The disaster struck the Gamo Zone earlier this month after heavy rains unleashed landslides across mountainous terrain. Local officials report that at least 80 people have died, while rescue teams continue searching for survivors in remote areas covered in mud and debris.
Thousands of residents have been displaced, and key infrastructure, including roads and bridges, has been severely damaged, hampering relief operations.
The government of Ethiopia has declared a national mourning period as emergency teams struggle to reach isolated communities cut off by flooding.
Strengthening bilateral cooperation
Pakistan also reiterated its willingness to assist Ethiopia in relief and recovery efforts. Officials said Islamabad remains in contact with Ethiopian authorities to assess possible humanitarian support.
The gesture comes amid growing cooperation between the two countries, particularly on climate resilience initiatives, as both nations face increasing risks linked to extreme weather and the global climate crisis.
