Islamabad: The government of Pakistan has decided to increase the levy on high-octane fuel from Rs. 100 to Rs. 300 according to a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif conducted via video link.
An official statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that the decision specifically targets high-octane fuel used in luxury vehicles. The statement clarified that fuel used by lower and middle-income groups will remain unaffected.
Under the new policy, regular petrol prices will continue at existing rates, and there will be no increase in fares for public transport or air travel. The government emphasized that the move is designed to avoid burdening the general public while focusing on premium fuel consumption.
According to the official communiqué the revised levy is expected to generate significant revenue for the state, with an estimated monthly saving of around Rs. 9 billion. Authorities stated that this additional revenue will be utilized to provide relief to the public and support economic stability.
The decision reflects the government’s broader strategy to balance fiscal needs while protecting essential transportation costs for the majority of citizens.
