Pakistan enforces an unprecedented nationwide security plan, deploying hundreds of thousands of personnel, drone surveillance teams, and strict traffic controls as millions of mourners participate in 9th Muharram commemorations.
Pakistan launched one of its largest nationwide security operations on Thursday as millions of mourners gathered to observe 9th Muharram processions commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) at the Battle of Karbala.
Federal and provincial authorities deployed hundreds of thousands of security personnel across the country, supported by advanced surveillance systems, drone monitoring, anti-drone units, and extensive CCTV coverage. Security measures were intensified amid concerns over potential terrorist threats and to ensure the peaceful conduct of religious gatherings.
In Karachi, more than 20,000 police personnel secured the main procession route from Nishtar Park, while mobile phone services were temporarily suspended in sensitive areas. Major roads, including MA Jinnah Road, were closed to regular traffic as mourners participated in central events.
Islamabad authorities deployed police, Rangers, and Frontier Constabulary personnel while introducing the “Mehfooz Muharram” mobile application, enabling citizens to report suspicious activities in real time.
Punjab activated a three-tier security framework, deploying over 152,000 personnel province-wide. Lahore alone assigned around 11,000 officers to secure 32 processions under a four-layer security cordon. Authorities also introduced QR code-enabled panic buttons at thousands of imambargahs for emergency response.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, up to 50,000 personnel were mobilized, with drone and anti-drone teams supporting security operations. BRT services in Peshawar remained suspended during Muharram observances.
Balochistan deployed more than 32,000 security personnel across Quetta and other sensitive districts. Meanwhile, strict traffic diversions and temporary road closures were enforced nationwide to facilitate processions and minimize security risks ahead of Youm-e-Ashura.
