Pakistan Concludes 9th Muharram Processions Peacefully Under Tight Security
Pakistan observed the 9th of Muharram with solemn devotion on Thursday as processions concluded peacefully across major cities, including Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Peshawar, following extensive nationwide security arrangements.
The day commemorated the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his loyal companions in the historic Battle of Karbala. Thousands of mourners participated in religious processions and gatherings, paying tribute to their sacrifice with respect and reverence.
Authorities implemented comprehensive security plans to safeguard participants and maintain public order. Thousands of police and security personnel were deployed nationwide, while sensitive locations were closely monitored. In several areas, including Rawalpindi, mobile phone services were partially suspended and key routes were secured as precautionary measures.
Earlier in the day, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry chaired a high-level security meeting attended by home secretaries and senior police officials from all provinces, as well as Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. Officials reviewed Muharram security arrangements and assessed preparedness for religious processions and gatherings across the country.
Addressing the meeting, Chaudhry stressed that protecting the lives and property of citizens during Muharram remains the government’s highest priority. He assured provincial administrations of full federal support and directed law enforcement agencies to strengthen coordination and respond promptly to any emerging security requirements.
