Travel vlogger and mountaineer Asma Mushtaq reportedly died from suspected altitude-related complications while descending Spantik after reaching its summit.
SKARDU: Pakistani travel vlogger and mountaineer Asma Mushtaq has died during her descent from Spantik, also known as Golden Peak, after successfully reaching the summit of one of Pakistan’s prominent high-altitude mountains.
Mushtaq, born Feb. 7, 1992, was known for her interest in mountaineering, travel and outdoor exploration. She had recently joined an expedition to Spantik, which rises to approximately 7,027 meters in the Karakoram range.
According to reports, Mushtaq reached the summit alongside her guide, Ali Akbar. She was reportedly in good health after completing the demanding ascent and began the journey back down.
The situation reportedly changed during the descent when Mushtaq developed symptoms believed to be linked to high-altitude sickness. Despite efforts by her guide to provide immediate assistance and first aid, she could not survive.
The incident has deeply saddened Pakistan’s mountaineering and adventure community. Spantik is considered a significant climbing destination in the country, attracting mountaineers to its challenging terrain and extreme altitude.
Arrangements for recovering and returning Mushtaq’s body are reportedly being coordinated with the relevant authorities, while Karakoram Calling Treks is said to be assisting with the recovery process.
Tributes also emerged on social media, with friends and fellow adventure enthusiasts remembering Mushtaq for her passion for mountains, beaches and nature. Condolences were expressed for her family following the tragic incident.
Her death also highlights the dangers that climbers continue to face even after successfully reaching a summit. At extreme elevations, oxygen levels are significantly lower, while exhaustion, weather conditions and altitude-related illness can make the descent particularly hazardous.
