PM Shehbaz Sharif reviews PIMS inquiry findings and performance audit, directing reforms, fire safety measures and free medical facilities within three months.
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday directed authorities to complete proposed short-term measures for improving the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), including its fire safety system, within the next three months.
The prime minister issued the directive while chairing a meeting in Islamabad on a roadmap for improving PIMS. The meeting reviewed the PIMS inquiry report and a performance audit of the hospital conducted by the Ministry of National Health Services.
Shehbaz directed that the short-term measures proposed in the inquiry report be implemented within three months.
He also called for all possible steps to improve PIMS and bring its systems in line with international requirements.
Regarding fire safety, the prime minister directed officials to seek assistance and recommendations from the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute (PKLI) to strengthen the hospital’s fire safety arrangements.
The meeting also considered recommendations contained in a World Health Organization (WHO) report. Shehbaz directed the authorities to examine those recommendations and ensure their implementation.
The prime minister further directed that measures to ensure the provision of medicines and facilities at the hospital completely free of charge be made part of the improvement roadmap.
The directions come as the government reviews the hospital’s systems and proposed measures following the inquiry into issues at PIMS. The meeting focused on translating findings from the inquiry report, the ministry’s performance audit and WHO recommendations into an implementation plan.
The prime minister stressed that improving PIMS and aligning its services and systems with international requirements should remain a priority, while specific attention should be given to fire safety.
