New weekly token system extends relief to small fuel purchases, while eligible vehicles registered after Jan. 1, 2006, can now register for the scheme.
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved an expansion of the Prime Minister’s Special Relief Scheme to provide greater access to subsidized petrol across Pakistan.
Under the scheme, petrol continues to be available at a discounted rate of Rs 100 per litre. In a new decision based on feedback received from across the country, motorcycles, Chingchi rickshaws and rickshaws purchasing less than five litres of petrol will also receive relief.
Under the revised mechanism, eligible users will receive one token every week, providing a total relief of Rs 500 through four tokens during a month.
Users of vehicles up to 800cc will continue to receive Rs 100 per litre relief on 10 litres of petrol every 10 days. Accordingly, three tokens for 10 litres each will continue to be issued during a month.
The prime minister had earlier announced that registration messages for people eligible for the relief scheme would be made completely free of charge.
He had also directed that 20-year-old motorcycles, rickshaws and Chingchi rickshaws be included in the Prime Minister’s Fuel Relief Scheme. Implementation of the directive has now begun.
All motorcycles, rickshaws and Chingchi rickshaws registered after Jan. 1, 2006, are now eligible to register for the scheme.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is personally monitoring the relief scheme and has directed authorities to expand its coverage and ensure that the petrol discount is provided to beneficiaries with dignity, ease and without disruption.
