PTI leader Sanam Javed received a significant legal development after the Lahore High Court sought a response from the prosecution on her plea for suspension of sentence and release in a May 9-related case.
A two-member bench headed by Justice Shahbaz Rizvi heard the petition filed by Sanam Javed regarding the Shadman police station arson case. The petition challenges the sentence handed down by the anti-terrorism court and requests her immediate release.
According to the petition, Sanam Javed was not initially nominated as an accused in the case and there is no concrete evidence linking her to the incident. The plea further argued that neither call data records (CDR) nor CCTV footage were presented before the trial court as evidence.
Her legal team also maintained that contradictions exist in the statements of prosecution witnesses and alleged that the anti-terrorism court ignored key facts while announcing the verdict.
The court, after conducting an initial hearing, issued notices to the prosecution and sought a reply. Further proceedings in the case have been adjourned until June 2, where both sides are expected to present detailed arguments.
The development is being closely watched due to the ongoing legal and political implications surrounding cases registered after the May 9 unrest across Pakistan.
