LAHORE: The Government of Punjab has approved a supplementary grant exceeding Rs861.5 million to cover operational expenses for its recently acquired VIP aircraft according to official documents.
The decision was cleared by the provincial cabinet under the direction of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz through a circulated summary. The funds will support fuel maintenance insurance, and training costs associated with the Gulfstream business jet.
Records show that Rs497.8 million has been allocated for maintenance and related subscriptions, Rs64 million for insurance, and more than Rs143.3 million for mandatory training of pilots and engineers in the United States. Authorities also approved monthly flying allowances of up to Rs750,000 for three Pakistan Air Force pilots on deputation along with Rs651 million for travel and daily allowances.
Officials said the allocations are necessary to ensure the aircraft meets international operational standards. However the move has sparked criticism amid Pakistan’s economic challenges including inflation and fiscal constraints.
Supporters argue that owning a modern aircraft will reduce reliance on federal resources for official travel while critics question the timing and priorities of such spending. The decision is expected to intensify debate over public expenditure and governance choices.
