Rawalpindi recorded 130mm of rain as Punjab authorities warned residents to remain alert for possible urban flooding and thunderstorms.
LAHORE: Heavy monsoon rain continued across several parts of Punjab on Tuesday, with Rawalpindi recording the province’s highest rainfall at 130 millimetres in the past 24 hours, increasing concerns over urban flooding, water accumulation and weather-related incidents.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Attock received 79mm of rain, while Lahore Airport recorded 65mm. Wazirabad received 50mm during the same period.
Gujranwala and Jhelum each recorded 39mm, followed by Narowal with 33mm and Mandi Bahauddin with 30mm. Gujrat received 19mm, Sialkot 11mm and Murree seven millimetres.
Heavy rain also affected Rawalpindi and Islamabad, where rising water levels in Nullah Lai prompted authorities to closely monitor the situation and sound warning sirens.
The latest spell has heightened the risk of urban flooding, particularly in low-lying and vulnerable areas. Authorities are monitoring drainage systems and other locations that could be affected if rainfall intensifies.
The PDMA said the sixth monsoon spell is expected to continue through Aug. 21, with additional rainfall likely in several parts of Punjab.
The authority has directed commissioners, deputy commissioners and relevant departments to remain on high alert and take timely measures if weather conditions deteriorate.
Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall and stay away from flood-prone areas. The public has also been urged to exercise caution during thunderstorms and lightning.
PDMA Director General Muhammad Saif Anwar Jappa called on citizens to remain in safe locations during thunderstorms and take necessary precautions as the monsoon spell continues.
