American Jewish scholar and author Yaakov Shapiro has stated that Israel does not represent Judaism and that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cannot be considered a representative of Jews worldwide.
Speaking on the television program Capital Talk, Rabbi Shapiro expressed strong opposition to the ongoing tensions and potential conflict with Iran. He emphasized that many Jews around the world do not support war and believe such actions go against religious teachings.
Shapiro further argued that the concept of “Greater Israel” has no connection with Judaism, describing it as a political ideology rather than a religious one. According to him, the state of Israel is fundamentally secular in nature and should not be equated with the Jewish faith.
He highlighted that Judaism, as a religion, promotes peace and spiritual values, and should not be linked with geopolitical conflicts or expansionist ideas. His remarks reflect a broader debate within global Jewish communities regarding the distinction between religious identity and state policies.
