Social media users react sharply after Sharmila Faruqui’s vacation in Turkey following her viral comparison of Karachi with Paris.
Sharmila Faruqui, a prominent Pakistani politician associated with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), has come under intense social media criticism after sharing glimpses of her vacation in Turkey shortly after a viral public statement in which she compared Karachi to Paris. Sharmila Faruqui had recently stated that she prioritizes Karachi over any city in the world, a comment that drew widespread attention and debate online.
Following the remarks, Faruqui posted pictures from her family trip to Turkey, where she is accompanied by her husband and son. The images quickly circulated across social media platforms, triggering a wave of reactions and trolling from users who questioned the contrast between her earlier statement and her choice of vacation destination.
Critics highlighted perceived inconsistency, with some users sarcastically referring to Karachi as “Paris” in response to her comment. Others suggested she should experience local transport and daily conditions in Karachi upon her return. Comments ranged from humorous mockery to sharper political criticism, reflecting the polarized nature of public discourse around political figures on social media.
Supporters, however, defended her right to travel and spend personal time with her family, arguing that vacation choices should not be politicized.
The incident has once again underscored how political statements and personal lifestyles of public figures are closely scrutinized in Pakistan’s digital space, often leading to rapid viral debates and online backlash.
