Sindh Local Government Minister Nasir Hussain Shah has stated that the provincial government is considering a smart lockdown if the ongoing regional situation continues to affect the energy sector. Speaking to the media in Sukkur he said daily meetings are being held to review measures aimed at reducing expenses and conserving fuel.
The Sindh government has already implemented several austerity steps, including the closure of schools across the province from March 16 to 31, introduction of work-from-home on Fridays for government employees, and suspension of government-funded refreshments in public offices for two months. Shah noted that fuel consumption has been reduced by nearly 60%, with a large number of government vehicles taken off the roads.
He emphasized that the current circumstances are extraordinary and warned that prolonged instability could have broader economic consequences. Citizens have been advised to limit unnecessary travel to help conserve fuel while the media has been urged to raise awareness about resource management.
Shah also pointed to international examples, stating that energy crises in other countries highlight the potential risks if the situation persists. He reiterated that the provincial leadership, including Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah is closely monitoring developments and taking decisions accordingly.
