Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity while calling for stronger cooperation and inviting Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa to visit Pakistan.
Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday reaffirmed Pakistan’s steadfast support for Syria’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity during a meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan Al-Shaibani in Islamabad.
Welcoming the Syrian foreign minister and his delegation, the prime minister conveyed his best wishes to President Ahmed al-Sharaa and recalled his recent interactions with the Syrian leader.
Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that the longstanding friendship between Pakistan and Syria should be translated into stronger cooperation in politics, defence, trade, investment, education and human resource development.
The prime minister said the resumption of direct flights between Pakistan and Syria could further strengthen people-to-people contacts and facilitate Pakistani pilgrims travelling to Syria for religious visits.
Pakistan also reaffirmed its support for Syria’s position on the Golan Heights, with Shehbaz Sharif stating that Islamabad would firmly back Damascus on the issue.
The Syrian foreign minister conveyed President al-Sharaa’s greetings and briefed the prime minister on Syria’s political transition and reconstruction efforts. He thanked Pakistan for its continued support and expressed interest in revitalizing bilateral relations through early institutional mechanisms.
Shehbaz Sharif also invited President Ahmed al-Sharaa to undertake an official visit to Pakistan at a mutually convenient date.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar, SAPM Syed Tariq Fatemi and Foreign Secretary Ambassador Amna Baloch also attended the meeting.
