WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump has once again shifted his stance on negotiations with Iran, introducing a new set of stricter proposals aimed at reviving a potential nuclear agreement while increasing pressure on Tehran.
The latest development comes after Trump had recently suggested that a final deal was within reach. However, reports indicate that the United States has now delivered revised terms that are significantly tougher than earlier drafts, creating fresh uncertainty around the already delicate diplomatic process.
According to reports published by The New York Times, the updated proposal is designed to push Iran toward accepting a previously discussed framework without further delays. U.S. officials reportedly believe that stronger conditions could accelerate Tehran’s response and improve the chances of securing an agreement on Washington’s terms.
Earlier in the negotiations, Trump expressed optimism about progress, claiming that Iran had provided assurances that it would neither develop nor seek to acquire nuclear weapons. Those comments had fueled expectations that a breakthrough might be imminent.
Adding to the confusion, Trump recently stated during a television interview that the strategically important Strait of Hormuz would be reopened on Friday. He later revised that position, saying the waterway would only reopen after a formal agreement had been signed.
Despite the shifting messages, Trump continues to insist that Washington and Tehran are close to reaching a deal. He has maintained that the United States is securing key concessions during the negotiations and remains in a favorable bargaining position.
At the same time, the U.S. president emphasized that he is not rushing toward an agreement. Trump argued that a hastily negotiated deal could undermine long-term interests, stressing that the administration’s priority is achieving a stable and beneficial outcome for the United States.
The renewed pressure comes at a critical moment for regional diplomacy, as both sides continue to weigh the political and security implications of any future nuclear agreement. Analysts say the tougher U.S. demands could either accelerate negotiations or deepen existing divisions, depending on Tehran’s response in the coming weeks.
