Washington: The United States has decided to deploy thousands of additional Marines to the Middle East amid ongoing tensions involving Iran, according to sources cited by international news agencies.
Officials say the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer, along with a Marine Expeditionary Unit and accompanying warships, is being sent to the region to enhance operational readiness and strengthen military capabilities for any potential future contingencies.
Sources indicate that while no decision has been made to send ground troops directly into Iran, the move reflects a broader effort to reinforce the US military presence across the region. The deployment is reportedly taking place about three weeks ahead of schedule.
US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that these reinforcements will raise the total number of American troops in the Middle East to over 50,000. Additionally, two Marine Expeditionary Units, each typically consisting of around 2,500 personnel, will be stationed in the region.
These units can be utilized for a range of operations, including airstrikes launched from naval vessels or potential ground missions if required. The buildup underscores Washington’s focus on maintaining readiness amid evolving geopolitical developments in the Middle East.
