Workers at the Heart of Nation: Zardari, Shehbaz Make Powerful Labour Day Pledge

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Pakistan’s top leadership reiterates commitment to labour rights, fair wages and improved working conditions as the world observes International Labour Day.

As the world marked International Labour Day, Pakistan’s top leadership delivered a strong message of solidarity with workers, pledging renewed efforts to safeguard labour rights, ensure fair wages and improve working conditions nationwide.

President Asif Ali Zardari paid tribute to workers, describing the day as a reminder of historic sacrifices made to secure fundamental rights such as reasonable working hours and fair compensation. Referring to the 140-year-old Chicago labour movement, he highlighted the enduring demand for balance in life: eight hours for work, rest and personal time — a principle rooted in human dignity.

Zardari emphasized that Pakistan’s 1973 Constitution guarantees protection against exploitation, obligating the state to uphold equitable economic practices. He acknowledged the vital contributions of workers across sectors, from agriculture to industry, noting their central role in driving national development through resilience and dedication.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s adherence to global labour standards, the president stressed commitment to eliminating forced and child labour, ensuring non-discrimination and implementing protections aligned with the International Labour Organization. He also highlighted the importance of social protection systems and fair wage policies.

The president gave special recognition to overseas Pakistanis, calling them key contributors to the economy through remittances while representing the country’s values abroad. He underscored that safe working environments, equal opportunities and adequate wages remain national priorities, alongside investments in human capital, technical education and increased workforce participation of women and youth.

Calling for collective action, Zardari urged governments, employers, trade unions and global partners to collaborate in building an economy based on fairness and opportunity. “A nation that protects its workers, protects its future,” he stated, stressing that empowering labour is essential for sustainable progress.

In a separate message, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif echoed similar sentiments, recognizing workers as the backbone of Pakistan’s economy. He praised the contributions of labourers, farmers, artisans and professionals, noting their role in sustaining economic and social systems from local industries to international markets.

Sharif highlighted ongoing government initiatives aimed at equipping workers with modern skills under the National Skills Development Policy. These efforts focus on internationally recognized training, language proficiency and certifications to enhance employment opportunities, particularly for Pakistanis seeking work abroad.

The prime minister also pointed to institutions like the Employees’ Old-Age Benefits Institution and the Workers Welfare Fund, which continue to provide pensions, housing, education and essential services to workers and their families.

He urged both public and private sectors to uphold labour rights and ensure dignified working conditions, calling it a shared responsibility. “Let us renew our commitment to honour and protect those who drive our progress,” Sharif said, expressing confidence in the resilience and global potential of Pakistan’s workforce.
