ISLAMABAD: Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhary said that 24 million people are benefiting from the Prime Minister’s Fuel Relief Scheme, under which eligible consumers receive a Rs100 per litre discount on petrol.
Addressing a news conference in Islamabad, Chaudhary said the scheme provides targeted fuel relief to owners of motorcycles, rickshaws, Qingqis and small cars with engine capacity of up to 800cc.
He said the subsidy has been implemented across the country and described the registration process as simple and transparent.
According to the minister, the initiative is aimed at providing direct relief to segments of the population using smaller vehicles for their daily transportation needs. The government has introduced a registration mechanism through which eligible beneficiaries can access the subsidy.
Chaudhary also outlined austerity measures being taken by the government in view of the current situation. He said fuel allocations for official vehicles had been reduced by 50% as part of the government’s efforts to cut fuel consumption.
The minister said the fuel relief initiative was being implemented alongside these austerity measures, with the government seeking to provide targeted assistance while reducing fuel use in official operations.
Responding to a question about planned protests by some political parties, Chaudhary said the government would fulfill its responsibility to maintain law and order in the federal capital territory.
He did not provide further details about the planned demonstrations or the government’s security arrangements.
