The government has removed the five-litre minimum purchase requirement, allowing eligible motorcycle, Qingqi and rickshaw users to claim weekly fuel relief through digital tokens.
ISLAMABAD: The federal government has removed the five-litre minimum purchase requirement under the Prime Minister’s Special Relief Scheme, allowing eligible consumers to receive petrol relief even when buying smaller quantities.
Under the revised mechanism, eligible motorcycle, Qingqi rickshaw and rickshaw users purchasing less than five litres of petrol can receive a Rs500 weekly discount through a single token. One token will be issued each week, with up to four tokens available to each beneficiary during a month, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
The change means beneficiaries no longer have to purchase the full five-litre quantity in a single transaction to receive the benefit. The Rs500 token can be redeemed for fuel in any quantity, enabling consumers who need smaller amounts of petrol to use the relief facility.
The government is providing a Rs100-per-litre discount under the nationwide fuel relief scheme. The revised arrangement is intended to make the subsidy accessible to eligible users who may not need or be able to purchase five litres of petrol at one time.
For vehicles with engine capacities of up to 800cc, the existing arrangement remains unchanged. Eligible users will continue to receive a Rs100-per-litre discount on 10 litres of petrol every 10 days, with three 10-litre tokens available each month. This provides up to Rs3,000 in monthly relief for eligible 800cc vehicle owners.
The government has also expanded eligibility for two- and three-wheelers by raising the vehicle age limit from 15 years to 20 years. Motorcycles, rickshaws and Qingqi rickshaws registered on or after Jan. 1, 2006, are now eligible for registration under the scheme.
Authorities have said the full value of the Rs500 token will be passed on to beneficiaries and fuel stations will not be allowed to deduct a service charge from the relief amount. The government is also working on alternative arrangements for fuel stations in areas with limited or no internet connectivity.
