Pakistan and Malaysia have agreed to deepen cooperation in security, law enforcement, trade and investment as the two sides signed an agreement on the transfer of sentenced persons.
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Malaysia have moved to strengthen bilateral cooperation in security and law enforcement, with Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif reaffirming Islamabad’s commitment to deepening ties during a meeting with Malaysian Home Minister Dato’ Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail on Friday.
The Malaysian home minister called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the Prime Minister House in Islamabad, where the two sides discussed bilateral relations and the regional situation.
Welcoming the Malaysian delegation, Shehbaz conveyed his warm wishes to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and inquired about his health, expressing hopes for his early recovery.
The prime minister said Pakistan remained committed to further strengthening its close and fraternal relationship with Malaysia across multiple areas, particularly security, law enforcement, trade and investment.
The regional situation also came under discussion. Shehbaz appreciated Malaysia’s support for Pakistan’s efforts aimed at promoting regional peace, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
Saifuddin Nasution Ismail conveyed Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s greetings to Shehbaz and expressed Malaysia’s desire to further expand its strong and longstanding relationship with Pakistan.
A key development during the meeting was the signing of the Agreement on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons between Pakistan and Malaysia. The agreement was signed by Malaysian Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and Pakistan’s Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif witnessing the signing.
The agreement adds another dimension to cooperation between the two countries in legal and law-enforcement matters and is expected to provide a formal framework for the transfer of sentenced individuals between Pakistan and Malaysia, subject to the agreement’s applicable procedures.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sen. Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi and other senior officials attended the meeting.
