Heavy rain has affected routine life in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, with authorities monitoring low-lying areas, drains and the Nullah Lai water level.
Heavy rain lashed Islamabad and Rawalpindi on Monday, leaving water accumulated in low-lying areas and disrupting routine activities in parts of the twin cities.
Intermittent rain continued across the federal capital and Rawalpindi, bringing relief from hot and humid weather but also creating drainage problems in several urban areas. Some roads and streets became difficult to navigate after the downpour.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms is expected in Islamabad, upper Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir and various parts of the Potohar region. Heavy rain and hailstorms are also possible at some places in Potohar.
Several areas of Islamabad and Rawalpindi received notable amounts of rainfall. Available data showed 15 millimeters of rain in Saidpur, 36 mm in Golra and 42 mm in Bokra. Pirwadhai recorded 34 mm, New Katarian 36 mm and Shamsabad 35 mm.
The rainfall also affected low-lying areas of Rawalpindi, where accumulated water caused difficulties for commuters. The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Rawalpindi has maintained a high alert, with staff and heavy machinery deployed at different locations.
WASA officials said personnel have been stationed around Nullah Lai and other low-lying areas, while water levels and the condition of stormwater drains are being monitored continuously. Heavy machinery has also been kept ready to respond quickly to any emergency involving water accumulation or drainage problems.
The situation around Nullah Lai and its connected drains remains particularly important during the ongoing monsoon season. During periods of heavy rainfall this season, water levels in Nullah Lai have risen to dangerous levels, prompting authorities to place WASA, Rescue 1122 and other relevant agencies on high alert.
In Islamabad, the risk of water accumulation in low-lying areas also remains. Authorities have repeatedly advised residents to stay away from stormwater drains, streams and areas prone to water accumulation and to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain.
Meanwhile, early morning rain in Kharian also brought relief from intense heat and humidity. The rainfall lowered temperatures and was followed by cooler winds, making the weather more pleasant for residents.
The Meteorological Department has forecast that rain may continue in Islamabad, Rawalpindi and the Potohar region over the next few hours. Residents have been advised to exercise caution, particularly near low-lying areas, stormwater drains and electricity installations.
Authorities and relevant emergency services have kept machinery and response teams ready to deal with any potential urban flooding. Residents have also been urged to take precautions during the rainfall and contact the relevant emergency services promptly in case of an emergency.
