Supreme Court suspends the trial court’s decision and grants bail to Iman Mazari and her husband on Rs200,000 surety bonds pending the Islamabad High Court’s final decision.
ISLAMABAD:The Supreme Court has granted bail to lawyer Iman Mazari and her husband, Hadi Ali Chattha, against surety bonds of Rs200,000 each, while suspending the trial court’s decision against the couple.
The Supreme Court said the bail was being granted subject to the final decision of the Islamabad High Court in the case currently pending before it.
A three-member Supreme Court bench had previously directed the Islamabad High Court to decide the couple’s pleas seeking suspension of their sentences. The matter remained pending before the apex court until the high court’s ruling.
During the proceedings, Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan observed that both Mazari and her husband are lawyers and said the court was extending consideration to their professional status.
“Both are lawyers; we are respecting them,” Justice Afghan remarked, according to the proceedings cited in the supplied material.
The judge also stressed the importance of maintaining courtroom decorum and said the couple should also be told to observe the court’s decorum.
“There is a difference between a lawyer and an ordinary person,” Justice Afghan further observed.
The Supreme Court’s decision provides the couple relief while the legal proceedings before the Islamabad High Court continue. The bail order does not amount to a final determination of the underlying case, with the Supreme Court linking the relief to the outcome of the proceedings before the high court.
In May 2026, the Supreme Court had directed the Islamabad High Court to decide the sentence-suspension pleas filed by Mazari and Chattha. The bench at that time comprised Justice Shahid Waheed, Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan and Justice Shafi Siddiqui.
