President Asif Ali Zardari has approved the appointment of Nihal Hashmi as the new Governor of Sindh following the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The president also congratulated Hashmi on his new role and expressed best wishes for his future responsibilities.
Nihal Hashmi who hails from Karachi has been associated with the Pakistan Muslim League (N) for several decades. During the second government of Nawaz Sharif Hashmi served as Adviser on Law and Justice from 1997 to 1999.
In 2012 he served as president of the PML N Karachi chapter and in August 2014 he was appointed as the general secretary of the party’s Sindh chapter. Later in 2015 he was elected to the Senate of Pakistan on a PML N seat from Punjab.
Hashmi’s political career also faced controversy in 2017 when he was expelled from the party after making a controversial statement related to the Panama Papers case. However, his party membership was restored in 202 paving the way for his return to mainstream politics.
