KARACHI/PESHAWAR: A key administrative split has emerged over this year’s Eidul Adha holiday schedule as the provincial governments of Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa announced four-day public holidays, extending the festive break beyond the federal government’s officially declared timeline.
The move comes after both provinces issued notifications confirming that government offices, autonomous bodies, and local councils will remain closed from May 26 to May 29, with exceptions made for essential services. The decision effectively adds an extra day of rest compared to the federal schedule.
In contrast, the Federal Government had earlier confirmed a three-day holiday period from May 26 to May 28, aligning most federal institutions and public departments under a shorter Eid break. This divergence has created a split calendar across different tiers of administration.
Further aligning with the federal schedule, the State Bank of Pakistan announced that all banking operations will remain suspended for three days, from May 26 to May 28, with normal services resuming on May 29.
Officials also confirmed that Eid ul Adha will be observed on May 27 (Wednesday), while May 26 will be marked as Youm-e-Arafah, a day of religious significance for Muslims preparing for Eid rituals.
The differing announcements underscore ongoing administrative variations between provincial and federal authorities, with Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa opting for a longer public break while federal institutions maintain a shorter official holiday period. The inconsistency is expected to affect scheduling in public services, banking operations, and inter-provincial coordination during the festive period.
