Ronald Araujo joins Liverpool on loan for the 2026-27 season as the Uruguay international looks to revive his career with regular first-team football.
Liverpool have strengthened their defence by bringing in Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araujo on a season-long loan, giving the Uruguay international a fresh start at Anfield after losing his regular place in the Catalan club’s starting lineup.
Barcelona confirmed Monday that Araujo will remain with Liverpool until June 30, 2027. Although the Spanish club did not disclose the financial details, Spanish media reports say Liverpool will cover his wages and have an option to sign the defender permanently for €55 million.
The move represents a major change for Araujo, who was previously considered one of Barcelona’s most important defensive players. The 27-year-old renewed his contract in 2025, keeping him at the club until 2031.
However, competition for places increased under coach Hansi Flick. Youngster Pau Cubarsi established himself as a key part of Barcelona’s defence, while Eric Garcia and Gerard Martin also remained options.
Araujo made 35 appearances in all competitions last season but was sidelined for several weeks because of mental exhaustion. After returning in January, he found it difficult to reclaim a consistent starting role.
Liverpool’s need for defensive depth has made the move particularly significant. Ibrahima Konate has departed for Real Madrid, while Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni are currently injured.
Araujo could now play alongside captain Virgil van Dijk as Liverpool begin a new era under Spanish manager Andoni Iraola. The club have also added young French defender Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes.
“I’m excited to be here at this massive club with lots of history,” Araujo said. “I’m excited to meet my team-mates, excited to get started playing, and I’m very motivated.”
