Water and Sanitation Services Peshawar has launched a citywide cleanliness operation ahead of Eidul Azha, deploying thousands of sanitation workers and hundreds of vehicles in an effort to maintain hygiene and ensure the safe disposal of sacrificial animal waste during the religious festival.
The large-scale campaign was formally inaugurated by Shahab Ali Shah, who distributed gifts among sanitation workers and handed environmentally friendly waste-disposal bags to residents during the launch ceremony.
Speaking at the event, Shahab Ali Shah announced special incentives for sanitation staff taking part in the Eid operation. He said workers participating in the campaign would receive an additional month’s salary in recognition of their services during the busy holiday period.
The chief secretary also revealed that the three districts demonstrating the best sanitation performance during Eidul Azha would receive special awards, aiming to encourage efficient waste management and cleaner urban environments across the province.
According to officials, nearly 4,000 sanitation workers have been deployed across Peshawar, while 16 collection points have been established in 42 union councils to facilitate the safe disposal of animal remains and other waste generated during Eid celebrations.
Authorities said around 800 vehicles are being used for waste collection and transportation operations. Special arrangements have also been made for lime spreading, chlorine treatment, disinfectant sprays and insecticide use to maintain sanitary conditions and reduce health risks.
Officials added that fumigation and spraying activities are being conducted across the city every morning and evening as part of preventive measures aimed at controlling foul odors, insects and the possible spread of disease during Eid holidays.
Residents have additionally been provided with special waste bags to help promote organised disposal practices and support the city’s broader sanitation efforts during Eidul Azha.
