Authorities have imposed Section 144 in Islamabad amid fears of unrest following protests against the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in alleged US Israeli strikes.
According to a statement issued by the district administration all forms of public gatherings have been declared illegal under Section 144. Citizens have been warned not to participate in protests demonstrations, or assemblies, with officials cautioning that strict legal action will be taken against violators.
The move comes after violent protests were reported in Karachi, including clashes near the United States Consulate General Karachi where multiple casualties were reported. Demonstrations were also monitored in Lahore.
Meanwhile, the United States Embassy Islamabad stated that it is closely monitoring protest calls concerning its diplomatic missions in Islamabad and Peshawar. The embassy advised US citizens in Pakistan to remain vigilant avoid large gatherings, and prioritize their security.
Authorities say the restrictions aim to maintain law and order and prevent further escalation amid rising regional tensions.
