Militants’ attack in northwestern Pakistan highlights rising security challenges despite ongoing counterterrorism efforts.
LAKKI MARWAT: At least six policemen were martyred Friday when a bomb struck their vehicle in the troubled Lakki Marwat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, officials and security sources said, signaling a renewed wave of militant violence.
The explosion occurred early in the day near a police patrol in the district, which borders Afghanistan and has witnessed repeated militant attacks in recent years. The interior ministry confirmed the fatalities, while the wounded were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Security officials described the assault as “cowardly” and noted that the deceased and injured officers were local personnel. Operations to track the attackers are ongoing, with authorities pledging to intensify counterterrorism measures.
“The brave soldiers of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police sacrificed their lives today for the nation’s peaceful tomorrow,” Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said, condemning the attack. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also expressed condolences to the families of the slain and injured.
Friday’s blast followed a successful joint police and counterterrorism operation in the same district, which killed two suspected militants and detained four others.
Authorities emphasized their unwavering commitment to eradicating militancy and restoring stability in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, even as attacks continue to challenge security forces along the volatile border with Afghanistan.
