Feature in testing may allow users to customize chat colors, wallpapers on desktop version
CALIFORNIA: WhatsApp is developing a new feature for its web platform that will allow users to personalise their chat interface with visual themes, according to WABetaInfo.
The update in testing is expected to introduce nearly 50 desktop themes for WhatsApp Web, including different colour schemes, chat bubble styles and wallpapers. Users may be able to apply a uniform look across all chats or customize individual conversations depending on preference and usage patterns across different chat environments.
WhatsApp Web has traditionally offered fewer customization options than the mobile app, which already supports background changes and interface adjustments. The web version has mainly focused on messaging, file sharing, voice and video calls, and multi-device syncing across devices, prioritizing productivity and reliability.
The new feature aims to close this gap by bringing stronger personalisation tools to desktop users. It may also help users distinguish between personal, work and group chats through different visual styles within the browser interface.
According to the report, the themes will only change the user’s own view and will not affect how messages appear to other participants. Meta Platforms has been gradually improving consistency across WhatsApp’s mobile, desktop and web experiences as part of its broader cross-platform strategy.
