A massive fire at Gul Plaza in Karachi has claimed at least six lives and left more than 20 people injured, exposing serious lapses in fire safety and building regulations. The blaze erupted around 10 PM on Saturday and was later declared a third-degree fire, triggering panic as several people remained trapped inside the multi-storey commercial building.
According to rescue officials, three victims were burnt to death, while three others died due to suffocation caused by dense smoke. Hospital sources confirmed that five injured persons are in critical condition, while others are undergoing treatment at various hospitals.
Deputy Commissioner South Javed Khoso said the fire intensified again in the rear portion of the building, warning that it could take four to six hours to fully control. He added that one person may still be trapped under debris. As a precaution, electricity and gas supplies in the surrounding area were suspended.
Sindh government spokesperson Sadia Javed revealed that Gul Plaza had no fire extinguishing system, proper exits, or ventilation. She disclosed that although the building was approved for 400 shops, around 1,200 were constructed illegally.
Fire tenders from across the city, along with Pakistan Navy and KPT teams, joined the operation. Authorities said the fire has been controlled by 60–70 percent, while search and rescue efforts continue. An inquiry has been ordered, with officials pledging strict action against those responsible.
