LONDON: Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has officially obtained British citizenship after completing all legal and immigration requirements following his long-term stay in the United Kingdom with his British-born wife Narjis Khan and their children.
The left-arm pacer, who has spent several years residing in England, has also received his British passport, marking a significant personal and professional milestone in his post-international cricket career.
Amir clarified that he has no plans to represent England cricket team at the international level despite now being eligible under British nationality laws. However, his new citizenship status could dramatically reshape his opportunities in franchise cricket around the world.
With British citizenship secured, Amir may now become eligible to participate in the Indian Premier League as a British overseas player, potentially removing restrictions that have historically prevented Pakistani cricketers from featuring in the lucrative tournament.
Cricket analysts believe the development could also strengthen Amir’s prospects in multiple global T20 leagues, where overseas player categories often influence team selections, visa approvals, and contractual opportunities.
Amir, once regarded as one of Pakistan’s most dangerous fast bowlers, remains a prominent figure in franchise cricket despite retiring from international cricket previously and later making brief returns to the national setup. His experience in leagues around the world continues to keep him relevant in the shortest format of the game.
The latest development has already sparked widespread discussion among cricket fans on social media, particularly regarding the possibility of seeing a former Pakistan international competing in the IPL for the first time in modern cricket history.
